How can food affect you during menopause?

Food choices to help you with the 34 symptoms of menopause

‘Tofu is my collagen’ says Dionne, along with ‘sugar makes me itch’. Professional cake eater Anna also suggests that sugar may be a villain, whilst acknowledging that ditching the sugar might not come easily.

Ok, no alcohol, no sugar, enough can’t do, what can we do? What helps?

The three stages of menopause are triggered by a natural reduction in oestrogen levels (oestrogen is a female hormone). The reduced levels can result in the 34 symptoms of the menopause transition. Many plants mimic oestrogen or are considered natural sources of plant oestrogen. A diet high in plant oestrogens can improve menopausal symptoms.

I know that soy is no substitute for sugar but all is not lost  - cake Wednesday is the highlight of the week at Jennifer Young HQ – I kid you not, we love it.

As we have developed as a team, our cake demands has evolved too.

At the time of writing, our special dietary requirements are

  • Gluten free
  • Dairy free
  • Vegan
  • Paleo (no refined sugar, protein heavy)

Cake Wednesday dictates that we each take a turn at making the cake, we don’t buy. The team may be fussy but we are not Michelin Starred – enthusiastic amateurs we are – and we manage cake without refined sugar, admittedly, raspberries and bananas feature heavily.

Trust me, if we can do it, you can do it.

Send us your recipes and we will share.
