My skincare routine: Jennifer Young, founder of The Menopause Plus

A nurturing skincare routine is the foundation of skin health, helping us to look and feel our best. Over time, our skin needs evolve, and so too must the way we take care of them - both topically and from the inside out.

As founder of The Menopause Plus and Beauty Despite Cancer, Jennifer Young is a specialist in natural, evidence-based skincare product manufacturing. She has dedicated her career to creating plant-based skincare products that support our wellbeing needs, especially for women in menopause.

Practising what she preaches, here she explains her skincare routine and wellness habits.

What skincare products do you use?

I use the Beyond Beauty Night Mask both morning and night, followed by the Beyond Beauty Frankincense Facial Mist, the MPlus Menopause Anti-Ageing Serum, MPlus Menopause Collagen Face Cream and MPlus Collagen Eye Gel.

What is your skincare routine?

I double cleanse with the Beyond Beauty Night Mask, leaving the mask on for a few moments before removing it when I have the time. Then I use a Kansa Wand before removing the second mask and an at home radio frequency machine when I am feeling indulgent. Then I spritz the Beyond Beauty Frankincense Facial Mist and leave it to dry, before applying the serum, moisturiser and eye gel.

What is your wider wellness routine?

For me the ideal day (and one which I aim to do as often as possible) would be to begin with a cleansing routine before going for a run through some woods with our crazy dog. Then I would spin (I have a Peloton app which I use with a non-Peloton bike), and follow up with a Pilates/yoga/core session. I try to spend an hour in the 'sweaty sack' (at home infrared ‘sauna’ sleeping bag) as well.

If I am working the day starts early and I make calls or do emails when I am in the 'sweaty sack'. If it’s not a work day, I will listen to an audiobook and am guaranteed to fall asleep.

I will try to take a swim (in a pool, I am not going anywhere near open water) whenever I can - my New Year's resolution is to improve my swimming technique. The day also has to include some really good food. I enjoy food I make and I love the making process so I’ll add some culinary activity into the mix.

I never struggle to sleep but sometimes I wake up very early. If I awake before 5.00am I partake in some sleep meditations.

What does 'wellness' mean to you?

I consider wellness and an ability to prioritise as being interchangeable – if one knows and can recognise what is important, wellness follows.

What are your wellness goals?

I’m not sure that I have any. I am fairly relaxed about most things. I live a ‘clean’(ish) life and it’s not a chore for me to do so.

I have struggled with the answer to this question so I asked the team what they think my wellness goal is and the answer was ’swimming’. I asked my lovely husband the same question and he said ‘I don’t know, what would you like it to be?', which I think sums it up - the goal changes over time but ultimately it's about feeling my best so I can enjoy life to the full.
