Updating your menopause skincare routine for spring

Heading into the spring feels like a very good time to talk about menopause skincare - the dawn of a new phase of life, and one that has so much joy to offer. In addition to skincare updates for the different times in our life however, there are things that our skin needs in the changing seasons to help it feel its best. In this article we take a look at how you can support your skin and help it look its best by adjusting for the spring months.

Double cleanse your skin

Cleansing properly is the foundation of healthy skin, not only removing all the dirt and impurities from the day, but also enabling skincare products to be more easily absorbed for improved appearance and wellbeing.

Why: Double cleansing means that your skin is as clean as possible before you start applying moisturisers. Good cleansers also have lots of beneficial ingredients in them, so a double cleanse not only makes sure you remove all make-up, products and dirt, but also gives your skin a chance to get the most benefit from the products you're using.

How: The trick with cleansing is to clean the skin thoroughly but to be gentle with it and not to strip it of all the good oils in the skin. Our suggestion is to use two different types of cleanser, both gentle and ensuring they both remove what you don't want on your skin but also nourish it at the same time. For example, you might try one of our facial cleansing oils followed by our Argan Enriched Micellar Water.

Exfoliate your skin weekly

Exfoliating your skin helps to remove dry, flaky cells, smooth its appearance, minimise the appearance of discoloration and help skin to get that glowing look. However, you also need to be gentle with the skin and don't want to overdo it when it comes to exfoliating, which is why it's recommended once a week.

Why: As we come out of the winter months, skin can appear more dry and flakey than usual. If you don't already exfoliate once a week, now is a good time to start, helping skin to look better naturally and helping make-up to sit better too.

How: Like we said, you want to be effective but gentle, so the exfoliating product that you choose is very important. We recommend OMS Enzyme Exfoliate & Resurface Mask, which is full of nourishing and calming ingredients like calendula and aloe vera, anti-ageing wheatgrass, prickly pear cactus to help reduce inflammation and soothe dry, sensitive skin, and vitamins B3, C, and E to help with cell renewal, blocked pores and the appearance of scars.

Layer your hydrating and moisturising skincare

In the spring months it's nice to switch to lighter moisturisers, particularly as the weather gets warmer. However, menopausal skin can often feel quite dry, so you still want to get that deep hydrating and moisturising effect. The best way to do that is by layering your products.

Why: Different products provide different benefits for the skin - some enable moisturising products to be more easily absorbed, some penetrate the skin to deeper layers than others, and some help to prevent moisture from escaping the skin.

How: We suggest a layered approach. After cleansing, use a hydrating spritz and let it dry on the skin. Then use a serum, like our Menopause Anti-Ageing Serum and finish with our Menopause Collagen Face Cream. If you're doing your morning skincare routine you may want to finish with sunscreen

Use targeted eye care

The skin around our eyes is especially sensitive, and it needs different ingredients to help it look its best. The fine lines that appear around our eyes are a lovely thing because they usually show how much we smile, but they are also a bit of a giveaway on the ageing front.

Why: Dedicated eye creams can help minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and keep your skin looking its best for longer. Ingredients target skincare issues that are specific to this area.

How: Try our Menopause Collagen Eyes Gel, which helps to brighten, tighten and hydrate the skin area around the eyes. We recommend using it after your cleansing, toning and moisturising routine - dab it on and allow the skin to fully absorb it before applying any make-up.

Face Fluid Sunscreen SPF50

Use sun protection for your skin

We all know that we should use sun protection all year round, but we don't often think about it unless it's glorious sunshine outside. In the spring our skin can be especially sensitive after the cold of the winter months, so it's especially important to remember this step in your routine.

Why: in addition to the (hopeful) arrival of sunnier days, lots of people go travelling in the spring. Perhaps you will head to spring sunshine or you might get a last skiing trip in. Either way, the water of the sea or swimming pools or the reflection of the snow gives skin a double whammy of UV rays as they bounce back up.

How: Lots of people get put off sunscreen because they worry it will clog their pores and cause breakouts. That's why it's important to use a dermatologist recommended product that offers a high degree of UVA and UVB protection, but that's also good for the skin. We recommend Altruist's Face Fluid Sunscreen SPF50, designed for sensitive skin to help reduce the risk of skin cancer and prevent premature ageing from sun damage. It contains vitamin E to help prevent cellular damage, is non-sticky and fragrance free. Apply after your regular moisturiser and allow it to sink in before applying make-up.
